  1. The A.I.M. Team Canton Area Elementary School Prereferral Intervention Process

  2. What is the purpose of the A. I. M. team? The A.I.M. team is a team of teachers and staff members whose purpose is to identify ways to improve the academic and/or behavior performance of referred students.

  3. What do the letters A. I. M. stand for? • Assess: Staff members collect information on the referred student’s academic performance or classroom behavior. • Intervene: The A.I.M. team discusses possible interventions or learning strategies to try in the regular education classroom such as reciprocal reading, tutoring, etc. • Monitor: Data is collected to help the team determine whether the referred student’s academic performance or classroom behavior improves.

  4. Who participates in the A.I.M. team process? • Classroom teacher • Other involved teachers • Parents/guardians • One or more of the A.I.M. core team members

  5. When might a student be referred to the A.I.M. team?

  6. Students are referred if: • there is below grade level performance on school-wide assessments (PSSAs, DIBELS, etc.). • there are significant academic performance difficulties in relation to peers. • their behaviors interfere with the instruction of self or others.

  7. Students are referred if: • they receive excessive demerits or detention. • teachers or parents request a screening for related services (Speech/Language, OT/PT, etc.). • parents/guardians have strong concerns about their child in relation to academics or in-school behavior.

  8. How does the A.I.M. team process begin?

  9. Students who are having academic difficulties (based upon a school-wide screening measure) may be identified as needing more strategic instruction in a particular skill area.

  10. These students are then scheduled to participate in additional work skill sessions that are presented individually and/or in a small group setting.

  11. Students participating in additional skill work sessions are monitored approximately every two weeks to see whether the suggested intervention is helping the students make improvements in this area. If progress is not observed, another type of intervention may be recommended.

  12. Students who are not making adequate progress acquiring a skill with the strategic instruction are recommended to receive more intensive instruction. This is when the A.I.M. team becomes more involved with the individual student.

  13. What happens next? • An action plan meeting is scheduled to identify problems, determine need for assessments or observations, propose interventions, and set goals. • Referred students are assigned to a more intensive intervention with more frequent progress monitoring.

  14. How will success be determined? • A follow-up meeting, which includes the parents or guardians, and possibly the student, will be arranged to discuss progress toward established academic or behavior goals.

  15. What should parents or guardians do if they are concerned about a child’s school performance?
