  2. Why good mentorship is important

  3. Program Overview • Objectives • Provide state-of-the-art training in Clinical and • Translational Sciences • Train future leaders in clinical and translational • research, who will successfully bridge the gap • between the laboratory bench and the patient • bedside

  4. Program Overview: Personnel • Razelle Kurzrock, MD, Director, Phase I Clinical Trials Program, MD Anderson Cancer Center Co-PI, CTSA Director, Research Education Training and Career Development, CCTS Doriel Ward, PhD, Administrative Director (hired 12/2006) • George Stancel, PhD, Dean, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, UTHSC Co-PI and Director, T32 Predoctoral Training Program, CCTS Angela Doggett, Sr. Administrative Grant Coordinator (hired 1/2007) • Jon Tyson, MD, MPH, Director, K12 Career Development Program

  5. CCTS Educational Trainees • CCTS Educational Trainees: MDs, PhDs, Graduate Level • Clinical Research Fellows • Doctoral and Masters Students • Faculty

  6. Education Initiatives • K30 Program: Razelle Kurzrock, MD, Director • Patient-oriented/translational research curriculum—Didactic • Goal • To provide innovative and effective training that leads to superlative patient-based researchers who will be prepared to become leaders in their fields • Courses in year 1 of CTSA • Biostatistics for Clinical Investigators • Translational Research, • Seminars in Clinical Cancer Research, • Human Protocol Research • Seminars in Clinical Cancer Treatment • Grant & Manuscript Writing

  7. K30 Curriculum: Progress • Successful collaborations with other TMC Universities have attracted quality students (MDs and graduate level) from Rice University, a prominent Ivy League equivalent institution • Successful enrollment—10 to 25 students in courses; two most popular courses (Biostatistics for Clinical Investigators; Grant and Manuscript writing) average 50-60 students (doubling enrollment from previous year) • Participants—Graduate students, fellows, residents or junior faculty who desire a career focus in clinically-oriented research • New Courses: • 1) Design and Management of Clinical Cancer Research Trials (on-line formal graduate school course approved for credit, directed by Dr. Maurie Markman, MDACC); • 2) Clinical Observation (Practicums) (2 half-days per month), associated with disease(s) most relevant to student PhD research; mentored by clinical practitioner from UTHHSC or MDACC

  8. Education Initiatives • T32 Predoctoral Program: George Stancel, PhD, Director • Goals • To establish core competencies for education in C&T research • To appoint, train, and mentor doctoral students in C&T research

  9. T32 Program: Progress All courses and core competencies in original application are operational and available to new students • Accomplished an ambitious goal of appointing most of our trainees (6 of 8) by April 1, 2007 • Anticipate appointing remaining 2 slots for students matriculating in summer term 2007 • Recruitment of high quality students including PhD (with prior clinical or public health experience) and/or MD/PhD levels • Establish a functional, staffed T32 administrative support office • Helped establish and promote new course work for Certification Program in Clinical Trials Research

  10. Education Initiatives K12 Career Dev Program:Jon Tyson, MD, MPH, Director Goal Individualized training of fellows and junior faculty from a variety of specialties to become leading C&T scientists and health professionals

  11. K12 Program: Progress Funded 6 highly competitive individuals (5 MDs, 1 PhD) from across the CCTS institutes. Project titles included: • Anti-Inflammatory Role of Ketamine in Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair • Ketogenic Conditions and Mitochondrial Heteroplasmy • Epigenetic Modulation of Immunotherapeutic Pathways in Renal Cell Carcinoma • Growth Determinants in X-linked Hypophosphatemic Rickets • Induction of Tolerance Using a Covalent Analog of Factor VIII • Mechanism of Radiation Resistance in Breast Cancer

  12. Education Initiatives MS/PhD Program: Razelle Kurzrock, Director; Emil Freirich, MD, Co-Director; Jonathan Trent, MD, PhD, Co-Director Goal To facilitate clinically trained investigators to strengthen their knowledge of basic biomedical research and to develop their ability as clinical investigators Mission:To provide rigorous training in contemporary biomedical science based on a thesis or dissertation project that involves data derived from studies involving patients Required Courses:Translational Research, Human Protocol Research, Seminars in Clinical Cancer Research, and Seminars in Clinical Cancer Treatment (developed as part of K30 curriculum)

  13. MS/PhD Program: Progress Ten highly qualified students (MDs and graduate level) now affiliated with the program, some of whom were recruited from the K30 program curriculum

  14. Future Plans (Year 2) K30 and MS/PhD Programs: • Continue the 6 established core courses and add two additional courses --Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research --Clinical Epidemiology • Aim for a 10% increase in student enrollment/courses • Continue active recruitment of curriculum students to the MS Clinical Investigators program or MS/PhD Patient-Based Biological Research program • Continuing discussions (during our CCTS and Steering Committee meetings) on how to expand and improve our curriculum/program, ultimately leading to expanding the discipline, possibly to a large P program. • Expand Steering Committee (meets monthly) to include leaders from across the CCTS as well as two students participating in K30 and/or MS/PhD program

  15. Future Plans (Year 2) K12 Career Development Program: • To recruit an additional 6 outstanding candidates by June 2007. • Announcement circulated as of March 7, 2007 • Application submission deadline on April 16, 2007. Two reviewers will be assigned per applicant • Selection will occur by the K12 Advisory Committee in June, 2007 • Training to begin July 1, 2007.

  16. Future Plans (Year 2)T32 Predoctoral Program • Develop and implement tracking and reporting system to monitor trainee progress and obtaining desired competencies • Expand applicant pool to include selected, outstanding PhD students conducting C&T research who do not have prior professional training or formal M.S. in another discipline • Initiate major recruiting activities at undergraduate campuses and other venues (e.g., national professional meetings) to attract quality students to CCTS schools and MDACC, and participate in our program • Develop mid-year progress reports involving trainee interviews with the PI and Advisory Committee Members to ensure that program goals are being met • Recruit an expanded cohort of outstanding trainees in Year 2 of the CCTS award (the number of slots will increase from 8 to 12 in year 2.)
