  3. Required by Law to Even the Playing Field The most unfair thing we can do in school Is to have equal expectations of Students who do not have equal abilities. Can you dribble a basketball? Can you play competitively with Lebron James? Can you throw the football? Can you play better than Johnny Football of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Cotton Bowl Champs? No? Well students with disabilities cannot learn competitively in the classroom without help.

  4. Special Education By Law: Individuals with Disabilities Act (Reauthorized in 2004): Outlines 13 qualifying disabilities: Can you name any of them? 1. Specific Learning Disability (SLD) 2. Intellectual Disability (ID) 3. Speech Impaired (SI) 4. Seriously Emotionally Disturbed (SED) 5. Other Health Impaired (OHI) 6. Orthopedically Impaired (OI) 7. Visually Impaired (VI) 8. Auditory Impaired (AI) 9. Autistic (AU) 10. Deaf/Blind (DB) 11. Multiply Impaired (MI) 12. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) 13. Non categorical Early Childhood (NCEC)

Do get uncomfortable?

What Special Education Really Is… • Services designed to assist students with disabilities be successful in the LRE: • Least to Most Restrictive • General Education Classroom w/Accommodations • General Education Classroom w/Accommodations and Modifications • General Education Classroom w/above and Access to Content Mastery • General Education w/above and some Special Education Classes (Resource) • All Day in Special Education (Life Skills or Adaptive Behavior Unit) • Homebound or Hospital Classes • Residential Treatment Facility

  7. Dyslexia? Dyslexia is a reading disorder that Impacts the way in which Students see the words. On a page. Special techniques are used To help students over come the disability.

What Does Teague Do? • Students with Dyslexia are served using a pull-out program called MTA (Multisensory Teaching Approach). • They are given strategies to overcome the reading difficulties. • If the problems are so severe that they need specially designed instruction, the students will have an Individual Education Plan through special education. If not, they will have an Individual Accommodations Plan through Section 504.

  11. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act This is a non funded mandate that impacts many areas such as the work environment, school environment, access to leisure activities, etc. It is an anti-discrimination law. In school, students who have a disability that does not require specially designed instruction (special education) or does not meet one of the 13 eligibility categories may receive services under Section 504.

  12. What Does It Require? • An Annual Meet of Knowledgeable People? (Usually the parent, teacher, counselor, and administrator) • Must have an evaluation indicating the disability. • Creates a plan for accommodations in the school environment. • Allows for accommodations on State Assessment when necessary for instruction and assessment.
