The Problem • There are moreengineering and engineering technology jobs available in the U.S. than trained people to fill them. • Need an additional 15 million E/ET workers by 2020. • By 2010, half of all baby boomers will be gone from workforce. By 2020, the other half will be retired. • The U.S. faces a critical shortage of new engineers: yet over half of all students in engineering schools drop out before graduation.   7. The Solution is to . . . Make a small change in the culture of American high schools by: Strengthening the core academic curricula. Adding a rigorous, technical program of study in pre-engineering leading to 2, 4 & 6 year postsecondary degrees. Oregon Institute of Technology

PLTW is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit corporation PLTW’s primary goal is to increase the number students choosing engineering and engineering technology in college – and to better prepare them to be successful Also to increase the number of females in engineering disciplines 10% above the national average Oregon Institute of Technology

Major steps to become a PLTW school • School District signs a “gentleman’s” agreement with PLTW, agreeing to: • Support teachers • Support for required equipment & software • Implement minimum of 4 PLTW courses within 4 years • Teachers sign up to take a intensive 2-week, 80 hour Summer Training Institute (STI) • Train in specific course they will teach that fall • Given full curriculum at completion….free of charge Oregon Institute of Technology

Major steps to become a PLTW “certified” school • Teacher must take STI in course they are teaching • School must have an Industrial Advisory Committee in place that oversees their PLTW engineering program • Must have a trained PLTW counselor • Must demonstrate to evaluator that: • Students are getting the required curriculum via student portfolios • Required equipment is on hand • Administration is supportive of the program • School must have a plan in place to offer the entire 4 course sequence of PLTW courses Oregon Institute of Technology

PLTW progress in Oregon • Intel grant of $30k to train affiliate faculty • ODE Math & Science Partnership grant of $535k over 3 years to: • Increase content knowledge of classroom teachers • Increase test scores of high school students • Develop a sustainable model to train high school teachers and increase student test scores • Intel grant of $45k to buy Computer Integrated Manufacturing equipment to teach PLTW CIM course • ETIC grant of $100k to help train and buy start-up equipment for 6 PLTW teachers Oregon Institute of Technology

Next Steps for PLTW in Oregon • Continue ODE Math & Science Partnership grant, next funding cycle grants due in July • Next phase to include a leadership component • ETIC grant of $30k - $300k due May 25 • Start-up packages for high schools • Approximately $30k per school • 2 teachers trained in IED & POE • Enough equipment to teach both courses Oregon Institute of Technology
