  2. Cells • All living things are composed of cells.

  3. Organization • Take substances from the environment and organize them in complex ways. • In multicellular organisms: • Cells are organized into tissues. • Tissues are organized into organs. • Organs are organized into systems. CTOS • Systems are organized into an organism.

  4. Energy Use • Use energy for growth and maintenance. • ENERGY is the ability to do WORK or cause change. • Work is the ability to CHANGE or MOVE Matter against other Forces.   w = F X d • Work for a cell includes growth and repair, active transport, and reproduction.  All which require ENERGY. • The source of energy for ALL organisms is FOOD.

  5. Response to theEnvironment • A response is a reaction to a stimulus. • Behavior is a complex set of responses PHOTOTROPISM GRAVITROPISM HYDROTROPISM

  6. Growth • Growth occurs through cell division and cell enlargement. • Cell division is the orderly formation of new cells from a parent cell. • Cell enlargement is the increase in cell size.

  7. Reproduction • Needed to continue the life of the species. ASEXUAL SEXUAL
