Define and confirm dialogue guidelines Tentative Guidelines • Each panel has 15 minutes to talk. • Listen respectfully, without interrupting. • Respect one another’s views. • Respect each other’s sincerity. • Respect the beliefs of others. • This is a forum to learn from and hear each other • Relate to your specific faith only, avoid comparison and evaluation.

  7. Survey results What would you like to learn about different faiths and the roles they play in people’s lives? In order to prevent stereotypes, at this event we want to clarify assumptions people have about faiths. What assumptions have you heard about different faiths?

  8. Questions/Learning Needs on Faith - Survey Results • What is Faith? Key Words / Ideas compiled based on the survey results: • Beliefs, values, history, traditions, customs, holidays (faith based), rituals, rules, restrictions, expectations (do’s and don’ts, taboos), clothing requirements, daily requirements (e.g. prayer), family values, gender differences, children’s role/requirements, concepts (e.g. karma, reincarnation, miracles) • What if someone doesn’t follow mandatory requirements? • What is Sharia Law? • What is Eid El Fikr? • Explain the concept of Karma? • Why are there so many sects in Christianity? • How does your faith support followers as they experience life difficulties, tragedies, and vulnerabilities? (including newcomers)

Questions/Learning Needs on Faith - Survey Results • How each of the faiths promotes non-violence, love, peace and unity (what do the faiths say about these topics?) • How is faith promoted in the community (within and at large)? • How does your faith view a secular society? Freedom of opinion? Human relationships? • What are some of the dilemmas facing your faith community? (E.g. practicing in Canadian society, relate your faith in the context of other faiths, people converting to other faiths, etc.) • How is the concept of evolution, medicine, and science considered or accepted within the faith?

  10. Assumptions about faith – what are the facts? Specific Faith Assumptions: • Hindus – peace loving, believe in many gods • Sikhs – turn to wholly men rather than medicine for medical help • Muslims – don’t get along with others • Christians – don’t care about religion General Assumptions: • Women are considered unequal in some faiths (not able to go to school or watch TV) • The more educated you are, the less religious • All faiths believe in the existence of Jesus
