  1. National Geospatial Strategy Meeting “SSRA PERSPECTIVE” National Cartography & Geospatial CenterStrategic Plan Geospatial Information - Conservation Solutions “Geospatial Information – Conservation Solutions” Tommie Parham – NCGC Director – 5-01-07

  2. SSRA ENABLING GEOSPATIAL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS • What geospatial data, services and technology is necessary to support and enhance business processes for: • The Field Offices • The State Offices • The National Office • National Centers & Labs • Technical Service Providers & Consultants • Farmers and Ranchers • Conservation Interest Groups and the public • Others NCGC NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL STRATEGY

  3. Geospatial Tools - Mobile Increase efficiency Provide more information Produce better products Enabling Complete Field Applications

  4. Geo Tools – Remote Sensing Photo Acquisition for NRI, Soil, and WRP Satellite Data Acquisition and Processing Imagery Technical Support

  5. RIAD/NCGC Remote Sensing Support • Orthoimagery • National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) • National Digital Orthophoto Programs (NDOP) – Innovative State Partnership • High Resolution Orthoimagery • Terrain Corrected Landsat (MRLC) • Commercial Remote Sensing Satellite Data Contracts (Alaska, Hawaii and Pacific Basin) • USDA-FAS • USGS-MCMC • NRI Data Mart • High resolution imagery • NRI Sample • WRP monitoring • USDA Small Area Photography with APFO • Example: EWP California photography • USDA Satellite Imagery Archive • Satellite images at no charge to states • Commercial Satellite Imagery Library (CSIL) • High resolution satellite imagery from National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) • National Disaster Response • ADS 40 • Landsat • Spot • IKONOS

  6. Geospatial Systems in Soil Survey Present Usage Jim Fortner, NSSC

  7. NRCS National Soil Information System Customer Soils.usda.gov Spatial Data (Dig Units) SSL Data Mart Models & Applications -- RUSLE2, WinPST, WEPS, etc Geospatial Data Gateway eFOTG Web Soil Survey Web Services/API Soil Data Viewer Soil Data Mart(s) Soil Data Warehouse NASIS Transactional Database Soil Staging Server Pedon LIMS NRI Geochemistry data mart

  8. Data collection & Development of SSURGO • Field scientists use ArcGIS to display sample points and to digitize new and edit existing map unit polygon boundaries • Use digital orthos and other imagery • Field scientists use GPS to georeference field observation points • GPS data points can be imported into Pedon PC application for storage • Field scientists use ArcGIS for pre-mapping activities • 3DMapper application used to display 3D image of landscape using DEM and digital orthos, LIDAR and IFSAR data • Soil maps digitized to SSURGO standards by Digitizing Units, or soil scientists in the field

  9. Delivery of data • Resulting SSURGO data stored in Soil Data Warehouse and Mart using Arc SDE • SSURGO data displayed via Soil Data Viewer and Web Soil Survey • SDV is a client application extension to ArcGIS 9.0 & 9.1 • Geochemical data from National Soil Survey Lab displayed and delivered on Web via Geochemistry Data Mart • SSURGO data in SDM can be accessed via new Soil Data Access web services (not yet made public, but in performance testing mode)

  10. Delivery cont’d • SSURGO and STATSGO data delivered to the public from Soil Data Mart and Geospatial Data Gateway in standard soil survey area datasets • Web Soil Survey allows customer to define their geographic area of interest (AOI) • Soil Data Access does this also • We intend to combine some of these functions to provide clip, zip and ship functionality to download SSURGO data for defined AOI.

  11. NSGD Definition – A national collection of soil geographic vector and attribute data needed to conduct soil survey operations (including investigation, development, assessment, QA/QC, national collection of expert rules and standards) and that meets most users’ requirements. Connection and processes between spatial and tabular data are transparent to the user and allow the user to obtain timely, consistent, accurate, and reliable soil geographic data products.
