PLTW High School Program (Engineering) Foundation Courses • Principles of Engineering • Introduction to Engineering Design • Digital Electronics Pathway Courses (HS offers 1 or more) • Computer Integrated Manufacturing • Civil Engineering/Architecture • Aerospace Engineering • Bio Technical Engineering Capstone Course • Engineering Design and Development

  3. Middle School Program:Gateway To Technology Foundation Units • Automations and Robotics • Design and Modeling Specialization Units • The Magic of Electrons • The Science of Technology • Flight and Space • Energy and the Environment • Green Architecture

PLTW High School Program (Biomedical Sciences) Principles of Biomedical Sciences introduces students to the study of human medicine, research processes and bioinformatics Human Body Systems explores basic human physiology. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of body systems and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions. Students use projects to investigate various Medical Interventions that extend and improve quality of life. Biomedical Innovations has students designing and conduction experiments related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease or illness.

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW • Assist in the Recruitment of Students by Communicating the Attributes of the Programs: • A Fully-developed Curriculum for HS & MS • Extensive Training for Teachers • School Counselor Training Conferences • 2 & 4-year College Course Credit • Systematic Evaluation • Continuous Improvement • Develops the STEM Pipeline

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW Recruiting Middle School Students in Worcester County • Career fairs • Send an invitation to every eighth grade student in Worcester County Public Schools encouraging them to apply to our STEM programs • STEM night at Worcester Technical High School • Middle school parent transition meetings • Group presentations to middle school students • Tech Quest- 8th Grade tours

  8. The Role of the Counselor in PLTW • Assist in the Retention of Students • Know the benefits of Career and Technology Education Programs of Study • Monitor students mathematics and science progress • Provide information on earning college credit

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW Worcester Technical High School Retention Efforts • Best fit • Middle school counselors and teachers help identify students that would be successful in our programs • Counselors maintain constant communication and collaboration with PLTW teachers • One-on-one meetings with students (and parents) to discuss grades, career interests, and projected course scheduling • Open communication w/ counselors at home schools • College & career planning (starting in 9th or 10th grade) • Internship opportunities (NASA, Hospitals, etc.)

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW • Monitoring and Evaluation • Assist in the College Certification Process • Assist in coding students correctly for the High School Completion file (USM, CTE and/or Dual Completer) • Ensure concurrent enrollment in in college preparatory mathematics and science courses

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW In Worcester County the counselors: Consult with PLTW teachers and students about successes and continuing needs of the programs Schedule students for rigorous coursework simultaneously with PLTW program courses Maintain relationships and attend meetings with Program Advisory Committees and Worcester County STEM Advisory Board for program assessment

The Role of the Counselor in PLTW In Worcester County the counselors: Use the PLTW Website Research the Colleges and Universities that are currently accepting PLTW credit Use promotional materials that are provided by PLTW Visit and participate in the PLTW classrooms Attend the PLTW/CTE conference each year
