Immigrants from France Henri Castro • Henri Castro was the leader of a successful group of immigrants from France. • In 1842 Castro agreed to form a colony near the Medina River in southwestern Texas. • He recruited most of his colonist from Alsace. • These people spoke a form of German and considered them german.

Immigrants from France Castro’s Settlers Arrive • In 1844, is when he led his first group of settlers to his colony. • They built a town called Castroville. • The colonist suffered from Indian raids, disease, and drought. • Three years later he settles over 2000 people. • He also settles Quihi, Vandenburg, and D’Hanis.

  5. Immigrants from France A Failed Utopia • In 1855 French immigrants tried to establish a colony near present-day Dallas. They called La Reunion. • The colony started to flourish quick but it soon failed. • Poor soil and farming techniques led to failure.
