  1. Maritime Piracy and Global Atmospheric Temperature By Joshua Lande

  2. The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) “The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t [wear full pirate regalia] (http://www.venganza.org/)

  3. Empirical Evidence

  4. Hypothesis • Maritime piracy is on the rise today. The FSM has become dissatisfied with pirates, so he is punishing us by increasing the temperature.

  5. Who is the IMB? • The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) • Created the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre in 1992. • Broadcasts daily reports on piracy. • Collect statistics.

  6. More Pirates Today From IMBs “Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships: an Annual Report,” 2006.

  7. Global Warming • Evidence suggests that the earth is heating up. • NASA’s GISS Surface Temperature Analysis. • Collects temperature data from many meteorological stations around the world. • Very thorough analysis.

  8. Global Annual Mean Surface Air Temperature Change From http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/

  9. Temperature Anomaly • Temperature difference from area average. • Little agreement about Absolute temperature. • Easier to measure.

  10. Maritime Piracy vs. Five Year Mean Temperature r = 0.911 (p = 0.000)

  11. Conclusions • Strong correlation between temperature and Piracy in recent years. • FSM is angry with us. • We should stop being pirates.
