  2. Presentation Outline • Recent / current FP4 projects (Esprit, B-Euram) • New IST projects (1st call) • This year’s calls: -IST /Growth WP Tasks related to displays-Timing • Conclusion • How to find more information

  3. Mission • Many SoA R&D on displays still on-going in Europe:--> need to gather momentum for industrial use • EC funding is small compared to industrial / MS R&D funding:--> focus on EU collaborative added value • EU was the largest user of displays Q4’99--> display production larger than in the US, but still imports a large share of its needs from Asia • FPDs are key system components, and becoming a very large market by themselves

  4. Today’s situation • 18 projects were/are funded in FP4/Esprit for a total EC funding of 38 MEUR • 4 new projects are being launched after the first IST call • Many technical results, patents, a few start-ups; but not enough industrial pick-up of results

  5. 26. Growth Calls Advanced Functional Materials Task 5.2 Highly advanced materials and resulting devices with multi-sectorial use. • Materials for electronics • Magnetic, optical • Materials for industrial systems • Bio-materials

  27. Growth Calls 2000 Generic activities: Functional Materials 5.2 Calls closing end March and 15 September:RTD and Networks/Concerted Actions Call closing March 2001: Networks/Concerted Actions, NO RTD

  28. Conclusion • Window for alternative display technologies is not closed, but narrowing: technology maturation • FPD Business is booming, but profitability is low • Display components are key, but added value is at system level + EU is strong on applications --> Interfaces making best use technology specifics • Most of the display technologies have been/are funded but: - Lack of effort on plastic/flexible displays- AMLCDs only weakly covered: reflects imbalance between EU industrial activities and importance of the market
