  1. Significant Figures Rules: • All non-zero digits DO count. • 24 = 2 • 3.56 = 3 • Leading zeros DON’T count. • (zeros in front of numbers) • 0.0025 = 2 • Captive Zeros DO count. • (zeros between non-zero numbers) • 1502 = 4 1.008 = 4 • Trailing Zeros DO count IF the number contains a DECIMAL. • (zeros at the end of numbers) • 100 = 1 2306.0 = 5 1.00 x 103 = 3

  2. Pacific/Atlantic Method A P If a decimal point is present, start on the Pacific (P) side and draw an arrow through the number until you hit a non-zero digit. Count all numbers without an arrow through them. Ex: P 123.003 g Answer = 6 If a decimal is absent, start on the Atlantic (A) side and draw an arrow through the number until you hit a non-zero digit. Ex: 10,100 cm A Answer = 3

  3. Try These! • 4.012 • 87,900 • 91.0005 • 500,001 • 0.005 • 0.6010 • 7,040, 100 • 2.100 • = 4 sig. figs. • = 3 sig. figs. • = 6 sig. figs. • = 6 sig. figs. • = 1 sig. figs. • = 4 sig. figs. • = 5 sig. figs. • = 4 sig. figs.

  4. Adding/Subtracting Numbers Using Sig Figs • Answer should contain the same number of sig figs as the number with the least sig figs in the problem: • 12.11 + 18.0 = 30.11 • 12.11 = 4 • 18.0 = 3 • 12.11 + 18.0 = 30.1

  5. Multiplying/ Dividing Numbers Using Sig Figs • Answer should contain the same number of sig figs as the number with the least sig figs in the problem: • 4.56 x 1.4 = 6.38 • 4.56 = 3 • 1.4 = 2 • 4.56 x 1.4 = 6.4

  6. Try These! • 4.01 + 0.03 • 87.9 – 85.1 • 4.13 x 1.2 • 500 / 5.5 • = 4.04 = 4 • = 2.8 = 2.80 • = 4.956 = 5.0 • = 90.90909 = 90
