  2. I. Volume A.Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. 1.Formula (Regular shapes) Volume = L x W x H There are 2 ways to measure volume. It depends on the shape of the object. An empty box has a large volume, but little mass.

  3. 2. Volume can be measured by displacement. (Irregular shapes) a. Displacement = the amount of water that is displaced or moved by an object.. How much water is displaced by the rock?

  7. II. History of displacement A. Archimedes discovered that the weight of an object is equal to the weight of the liquid it displaces. As the object submerges the liquid is displaced. (pushed upward)

  8. III. Archimedes’ Principle A. If the weight of the water displaced is less than the weight of the object, it SINKS. B. If the weight of the water displaced is equal to or more than the weight of the object, it FLOATS.

  9. C. Archimedes' Principle explains why steel ships float and a steel mass will sink. 1. The Ball Sinks – Displaced water weighs less then the ball 2. The Boat Floats –Displaced water is equal to the weight of the boat
