The U.S. Control of the Philippines: A Complex History of Promised Independence and Imperialism

After the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, the United States claimed it would grant the Philippines immediate independence. However, this was met with nationalist declarations of independence and the establishment of the Philippine Republic. The acquisition of the Philippines sparked a debate over American imperialism, as the U.S. sought to prepare the nation for self-governance while also exploiting its resources economically. The Philippines was initially under Spanish control starting in 1571. The U.S. ultimately took control in two phases, from 1898 to 1935 and from 1935 to 1946.
