  2. Prior Knowledge • Trent is a city in Italy • The council of Trent was part of the Counter-Reformation • Began in 1545 • Pope Paul III reigned as pope from1534-1549 • Pope Paul III

  3. Who was involved • Pope Paul III saw that the Protestant Reformation was spreading, so he organized the meeting for the Council of Trent • The Catholic Church • The Protestants were invited, however, they didn’t have a say • Calvinist and Lutheran were asked to participate

What happened • Pope Paul didn’t like how fast the Protestant religion was spreading he summoned church leader to Trent, Italy (Council of Trent) • There were three meeting; lasted 1545-1563 • The council reviewed to over look church doctrines (a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church) • They reviewed the complaints by the Protestants about the Catholic Church • Banned the sale of indulgences and it tightened discipline for the clergy

What happened continued… • Council reaffirmed the importance of the doctrines the Protestants didn’t want • The council’s decision emphasized the worship of God and the need for religious ceremonies and people must depend on priests • Reforms started to happen because of all the corruption in the Catholic Church

  7. Religious Disunity from the council of trent • The council of Trent went against everything Lutherans preach ↓↓↓ • People found the Protestantism’s simplicity and austerity (strictness, sternness) appealing, but others took comfort from traditional ceremonies and churches
