HPD/HCS K-9 Operation • Event: Huntsville Police Department (HPD) Support to HCS Computer Refresh Project • Date: July 10, 2013 • Location: 714 Bob Wallace Ave., Huntsville, AL 35801 (Main Warehouse Facility) • Activity: HPD Canine Unit Conducted Drug Search of Student Laptop Bags • As the designated regional canine training program, HPD Special Operations provides canine training for a number of area police departments. • This was a joint training opportunity: Dogs and handlers from both the Huntsville Police Department and the Albertville Police Department were present.

  4. HPD/HCS K-9 Operation • In support of the district-wide computer refresh project, members of the HPD Canine Unit conducted a successful drug search of approximately 1,400 student laptop bags. • 9 Officers and 9 Dogs led by HPD Sergeant Huskey as well as 4 HCS employees: Lontrell Harris (Asset Mgt Coordinator), Edward Smith (Operations Deputy Director), Jackie Kent (Warehouse), and Donnie Damson (Warehouse) • Two weeks prior to the event, Sergeant Huskey met with Lontrell Harris at the main warehouse to conduct a site visit. During the meeting details of the drug search to be conducted by the canine team(s) were finalized. • The resulting event provided both the validation that no illegal substances were hidden in the bags and a valuable training event for drug dogs from Huntsville PD and Albertville PD.

  5. HPD/HCS K-9 Operation • The bags turned in by class of 2012 graduating seniors at all district high schools were consolidated and arrayed on the floor of the main warehouse to facilitate an efficient drug search by the dogs.

HPD/HCS K-9 Operation • The bags were checked nine times (once by each Officer/Dog team). • To increase training value and validate the abilities of each canine, officers planted real drugs in a desk drawer. During each sweep by the canine team, the dogs ‘hit’ on the correct drawer containing the illegal substance.

  7. Butler HS Space Reduction • BUTLER SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION – SCOPE OF WORK • The objective is to close off unused or problem areas from students in the core building. This is achieved by moving the majority of classes to the second floor of the building and closing off secluded corridors not necessary to egress. Doors into closed off areas will be locked, armed with an audible door contact alarm, and provided with signage which note these doors are alarmed and if it is an emergency exit.

Butler HS Space Reduction • First Floor Closed-off Area: 28,839 SF (27% of total First Floor). • First Floor Limited Access Area: 49,013 SF (45% of total First Floor). • 30 existing doors will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • 4 new partitions and doors along with 1 relocated door will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • All lockers will be removed. • Federal Programs, Upward Bound, Testing, Boys and Girls Club, and Auditorium are separated from main high school student body in limited access areas. • Smoke detection is added in closed-off areas. 7 operable partitions removed to increase smoke detection areas and reduce the number of added smoke detectors. • Water and power hookups are added for a greenhouse in the possession of Huntsville City Schools.

Butler HS Space Reduction • Second Floor Closed-off Area: 0 SF (0% of total Second Floor). • All lockers will be removed. • Art, which is closed off on first floor, is relocated to second floor with the removal of 1 operable partition and the addition of a sink. • School Resource Office, which is closed off on first floor, is relocated to second floor with the removal the addition of a data cable line and the replacement of door hardware. • 1 storage room is converted to 2 ROTC dressing rooms with 1 partition and 2 door locksets. • 1 computer lab is converted to a classroom by removing built-in computer carrels and office. • 1 storage room is converted to a classroom by removing built-in shelving. • 3 partitions with cased openings will be removed to free up student traffic flow.

  12. Johnson HS Space Reduction • J.O. JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION – SCOPE OF WORK • The objective is to close off unused or problem areas from students. This is achieved by moving the majority of classes to the first floor of the building and closing off secluded corridors and stairwells not necessary to egress. Doors into closed off areas will be locked, armed with an audible door contact alarm, and provided with signage which notes that these doors are alarmed and if it is an emergency exit.

Johnson HS Space Reduction • First Floor Closed-off Area: 13,421 SF (10% of total First Floor). • 13 existing doors will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • 2 new partitions and doors will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • At perimeter of closed-off areas, wire mesh will be added above ceiling to prevent students from accessing closed-off areas above ceiling. • Portions of a 140’ long wall between 2 parallel corridors will be removed for ease of security personnel to maneuver between the 2 corridors. • All lockers will be removed to improve sightlines. • 1 large classroom split into 2 classrooms with the addition of 1 partition. • 1 door and partition added to provide a dedicated exit for a “land-locked” classroom. • 2 doors added and 1 door reworked to provide a second exit in classrooms with capacity for over 50 people. • Art, which is encompassed in the second floor closed off areas, will relocate to the first floor via the removal of unused theatrical lighting and curtain rigging and the addition of a sink and mechanical exhaust. • Principal requested items include: replacing 5 existing accordion partitions with wall partitions, covering an exterior window in a relocated ROTC room, and adding a sink in a relocated ROTC room.

Johnson HS Space Reduction • Second Floor Closed-off Area: 36,807 SF (28% of total Second Floor). • 11 existing doors will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • 1 new partition and door will be locked, alarmed, and provided with signage. • At perimeter of closed-off areas, wire mesh will be added above ceiling to prevent students from accessing closed-off areas above ceiling. • All lockers will be removed to improve sightlines. • Huntsville City Schools will add an Aesthetics lab.
