  6. God’s approach to man’s redemption • Theology of Salvation: Soteriology • God’s creation was good and perfect: • Man’s habitation was carefully prepared to provide for all his needs: physical, emotional and intellectual. • Man was tempted by the devil and sinned (disbelief and disobey) on his own accord. (Enticed by own lust, carried away, conceived, birthed). • Sin entered the world by one man and with it the curse: on the devil, man and even nature. Man was put out of the garden and condemned to death. • As a consequence of his fall his original nature was polluted and weakened and he lost many of the privileges and provisions he had before. • Man’s depravation: Total vs. Partial. • Original sin and the passing down of the sinful nature and death. • But, God made a gracious promise: Redemption from Adam’s “seed.” • Also by one man salvation entered the world and offered to all (whosoevers). • Those who believe would be saved through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.

  7. Adam's acknowledges his stateand attempts to correct it • Acknowledgement and Feeble Attempts to cover sin • (Gen. 3:7-13) • Loin cloths of fig leaves • Tried to hide from God • Fear came upon them • The Blame Game • Adam blames Eve & by extension also God • Eve blames the serpent “7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden …, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LordGod …. 9 But the Lord God called … to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit …, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

  8. Man’s acknowledgement of his state • Self-Sabotage: • The judge (The Mind, Intellect) … Early helper, later a tyrant! • His Accomplices: From: Positive Intelligence by ShirzadChamine

  9. Man’s attempt at self-redemptionMind research Mind’s Capacity & Capability: From: Positive Intelligence by ShirzadChamine

  10. What is lacking from man’s approach? • Underestimate The Problem (The Depravity of Man is pervasive- whole being is polluted, corrupted) • Soul (Mind, Brain- Means for Decision-making): Corrupted, diluted • Spirit (Means of interacting with the Life-Giver): Severed connection • Body (Means of interacting with the physical world): Sick

  11. The state of the unredeemed(Eph. 4:17-19) SPIRIT Life Source • 17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, • 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorancethat is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; • 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleannesswith greediness. SOUL Intellect Will Emotions BODY Sins of The Flesh

  12. What is lacking from man’s approach? • Underestimate Man’s adversaries(Not easily identified /defeated) • The Devil- powerful enemy: • “roaring lion” (I Pet. 5:8) • The Flesh- its weakness & powerful appetites (Rom. 6:19) • The World- its influence and attraction (I Jn. 2:16; 5:19) • Conscience and the Law –Accuse & Condemn (Rom. 7:5) 23 “…but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Rom 5:23-24

  14. the Nature of redemption • What is Redemption? • Useful Definitions • redemption : noun \ri-ˈdem(p)-shən\ • removal of a financial obligation by paying off a note. • repurchase, as of something sold (or lost of possession?). • deliverance; rescue. • atonement for guilt. • the act of making something better or more acceptable

  15. truths about redemption • Redemption starts with a single transaction: • The price of Redemption was paid completely at the cross • The access to God is open. The offer of salvation is available to all men. • Whosoever believes changes position (death to life); receives the assurance of salvation • Redemption is about salvation of the soul and the restoration of the whole man: • A clean heart, a renewed spirit. A new body at the resurrection • This restoration is a process that starts here and ends there • Salvation is the work of God, but man’s will is involved. Redemption also involves the active participation of man • An expressed desire to be redeemed completely • Applied spiritual effort to allow God to restore us. Yield to the Spirit of God • Fight daily the battle of faith with the armor of God • Allow the Lord to cleanse him daily. The Redemption Process is not yet finished !!

  16. redemption plan: God redeems, man responds & receives Christ pays for the transgressions of all mankind Man hears the “Good News” and Believes in the vicarious sacrifice of Christ, as our redeemer; repents for his sins and ask for forgiveness (Opp. Choice: Reject) God accepts Christ sacrifice in behalf of the repentant sinner, imputing his sins to Christ and imputing Christ’s righteousness to man. Man endeavors to follow Jesus in word and deed (Opp. Choice: Disobey, Rebel) God begins the process of redemption of the whole of man (Spirit, Soul, Body) Mans obeys God’s Word and avails himself of God’s provision for Redemption(Opp. Choice: Neglect to learn, heed, obey, grow) God completes the redemption work in the resurrection of the dead God removes the curse from creation & restores all things new. (Rom 8:21)

  17. God’s redemptive provisions • The Word, Prayer, The Holy Spirit(Mighty Defenders and weapons) • A New Nature:………………………………....Not subject to the law of sin. 18. Man’s response & responsibility • OT: “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7(ESV) "He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before your God?" Micah 6:8 • Spiritual: Think… Humility, an attitude of the mind (vs. Independence) • Relational (Soul): Feel… Love mercy (Do onto others) • Physical (Body): Do… justly (establish His kingdom)

  19. Man’s response & responsibilityre-establish the spiritual connection with god SPIRIT “And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 Life Source SOUL Emotions Will Intellect BODY Physical

  20. Our response • How much do I love Thee?: Rebuilding the Connection • With all my heart: • Do I love God exclusively? • Do I love God intensely? • Do I love God expressively? • With all my Soul • Is God’s will my prime motivation? • Is God’s law my rule of conduct? • With all my Strength • Is all I do done for His glory? • With all my mind • Is His law pre-eminence in my thoughts: “I love His Law…” • How is my process of redemption doing? It starts with my connection with God

  21. Man’s response & responsibility“put off >> renew >> put on”(Eph. 4:20-24) • 20 But you have not so learned Christ, • 21 if indeed you have heard Himand have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: • 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, • 23and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, • 24 and that you put on the new manwhich was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. SPIRIT Life Source SOUL Intellect Will Emotions BODY Fruit of The Spirit

  22. Our response • Am I Growing or shrinking back?: Growing in Christ • Learned Christ? • Heard Him? • Taught by Him? • Put off the “old man” (Rom 12:1)- Living sacrifices • Corruption • Deceitful lusts • Be renewed in the Spirit of your mind (Rom 12:2) • Be transformed • Prove the will of God, acceptable and perfect • Put on the new man- Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22) • Created according to God: Righteousness and Holiness • Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness • How is my process of redemption doing? It consists of Spiritual Growth!!

  23. Consecration prayer • Many of us would have to admit that our growth process is not what it ought to be • Even our connection to God is not what it should be either • Would you pray with me and commit yourself to the process of redemption that God wants to complete in you? • Love God • Live the Christian life: Grow in the knowledge and the faith of Christ • Work out your salvation with fear and trembling… It is that important!!
