  2. I. Square Deal • A. Definition • 1. The Square Deal was the term to describe the various progressive reforms sponsored by the Roosevelt administration.

  3. II. Using Federal Power • A. Trustbusting • 1. Filed 44 antitrust suits. • 2. Sued the Northern Securities Company which had a monopoly over northwestern railroads.

  4. B. 1902 Coal Strike • 1. Coal miners went on a five month strike. • 2. Roosevelt called both sides to the White House and threatened to take over the mines. • 3. From then on Fed. Gov. was expected to intervene. • 4. Strikes could be solved by experts through arbitration.

  5. C. Railroad Regulation • 1. The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 prohibited fixing high prices. • 2. The Elkins Act of 1903 made it illegal for railroad officials to give and shippers to receive rebates for using certain railroads. • 3. The Hepburn Act of 1906 limited the distribution of free railroad passes.

  6. III. Health and the Environment • A. Regulating Food and Drugs • 1. The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 which required meatpackers to maintain clean and sanitary conditions in their factories. • 2. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 halted the sale of contaminated foods and medicines and called for truth in labeling.

  7. B. Conservation • 1. Conservation is the preservation of wilderness lands for national parks and the common good. • 2. John Muir persuaded Roosevelt to set aside 148 million acres of forest reserves. • 3. The Newlands Act of 1902 established that the Fed. Gov. would manage the precious water resources of the West.
