  2. A Command… Children Obey and Honor “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother,” Ephesians 6:1, 2 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” 1 Timothy 5:8 • Obedience is first and foremost a commitment to God • Obedience is an active pursuit not a passive obligation • Obedience is both an action and an attitude • Obedience is not optional in the case of imperfect parents and parenting • Honor celebrates and recognizes the worth of God’s gift of parents • Honor continues into adulthood (1 Timothy 5:8)

  3. A Promise… It will be well with you which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. Ephesians 6:3 • The foolish son reaps dishonor, discontent and destruction • Proverbs 17:21, 25; 19:13, 26; 20:20; 28:24; 30:11, 17; 28:7; 13:15 • The wise son inherits praise, peace and prosperity • Proverbs 13:1; 15:20; 23:24-25; 29

  4. A Promise… It will be well with you Proverbs 17:21 21 He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy. Proverbs 17:25 25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him. Proverbs 19:13 13 A foolish son is the ruin of his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping. Proverbs 19:26 26 He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother Is a son who causes shame and brings reproach. • The foolish son reaps dishonor, discontent and destruction • Proverbs 17:21, 25; 19:13, 26; 20:20; 28:24; 30:11, 17; 28:7; 13:15

  5. A Promise… It will be well with you Proverbs 20:20Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp will be put out in deep darkness. Proverbs 28:24Whoever robs his father or his mother, And says, “It is no transgression,” The same is companion to a destroyer. A Promise… It will be well with you Proverbs 30:17 17 The eye that mocks his father, And scorns obedience to his mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it. Proverbs 28:7 7 Whoever keeps the law is a discerning son, But a companion of gluttonsshames his father.   7. A Promise… It will be well with you Proverbs 13:1 1 A wise sonheeds his father’s instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. A Promise… It will be well with you Proverbs 23:24-25 24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him. 25 Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice.   9. A Caution… Provoke Not Your Children Ephesians 6:4, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Colossians 3:20-21“Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.” • Do not exasperate your children with inconsistent discipline • Do not exasperate your children with unrealistic expectations • Do not exasperate your children with lawlessness • Do not exasperate your children with relation-less rules RULES WITHOUT RELATIONSHIP LEADS TO REBELLION

  10. A Prescription… Bring Them Up Ephesians 6:4, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. • Discipline—Correction through consequences • Hebrews 12:5-11, Proverbs 22:15

A Prescription… Bring Them Up Hebrews 12:5-115 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” • Discipline—Correction through consequences • Hebrews 12:5-11, Proverbs 22:15

A Prescription… Bring Them Up Hebrews 12:5-117 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. • Discipline—Correction through consequences • Hebrews 12:5-11, Proverbs 22:15

  13. A Prescription… Bring Them Up Hebrews 12:5-119 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. • Discipline—Correction through consequences • Hebrews 12:5-11, Proverbs 22:15

  18. A Prescription… Bring Them Up • Train Up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not go far from it. Proverbs 22:6

Three Keys to Life… To Children… Obey and Honor To Parents… Bring Them up -Don’t Exasperate -Do Discipline -Do Direct • My Goal in Life is To Please God • 2 Corinthians 5:9 • I Please God by being like Jesus • Matthew 3:17 • God Knows I’m not perfect but He expects me to be growing • Philippians 1:6
