  4. Why are we here today? • To publicise the work of the MSC • To highlight revisions to the NOS • To start a dialogue and pioneer change

  5. The Key Purpose of Management and Leadership is to… Provide direction, gain commitment, facilitate change and achieve results through the efficient, creative and responsible deployment of people and other resources.

  6. Management and Leadership in context 4.2m Managers/Leaders in the UK 1.75m employed in SMEs 15% of the total working population 35% of Managers are female 6% of Managers from ethnic minorities

  7. Management and Leadership in context II Between now and 2020 890,000 new managers are needed. Less than 20% of managers qualified in management. Productivity of UK managers lags behind France, Germany and the US.

  8. Management and Leadership in context III • Historical lack of investment in training of managers and leaders • Problems of moving into management roles • Lack of diversity in senior management • New management & leadership skills are required!

MSC’s Role • Guardians of the Management and Leadership NOS • To publicise and promote the Management and Leadership Learning and Qualifications Strategy. • Manage and certificate the Management Apprenticeship programmes • Oversee and facilitate the Management & Leadership Qualifications Forum. • Work with the Alliance of Sector Skills Councils to champion M&L across the network.

  10. The Management and Leadership NOS Gaps identified with 2004 standards. Extensive review between 2006 – 2008. 27 New standards – built on feedback. Work undertaken on presentation. Better suited to adoption by sectors.

  11. The Management and Leadership Learning and Qualifications Strategy. Managers and leadersseize relevant and attractive opportunitiesto develop their knowledge, skills and performanceto national and international standards,and have their achievements recognisedthrough qualifications of real value.

  12. Principles 1. Managers and leaders continuously develop their knowledge, skills and performance as part of their professional and contractual commitments 2. Organisations and their managers accurately pinpoint their learning and development priorities 3. Learning and qualifications deliver real benefits for managers and their organisations 4. Learning and qualifications are based on National Occupational Standards as the common currency 5. Learning can be accessed when managers require it, in bite-sized chunks which offer credit towards meaningful qualifications 6. Extended learning programmes develop the knowledge and skills of unqualified and aspirant managers and those wishing to progress their careers 7. Learning and qualifications are delivered in diverse formats which meet individual managers’ learning needs and styles 8. Learning and qualifications are portable and support managers’ career progression 9. Learning and qualifications are accessible and easily understood by employers, managers and leaders 10. Learning and qualifications are credible and inspire confidence in employers, managers and leaders
