  1. Welcome to your NQT year! Are you ready for the roller coaster ride of your life?

  2. The Highs • The children • The daily variety • Having fun • Pupil and parental feedback • Making a difference

  3. The Lows • Never enough time! • Pupil behaviour – (small minority). • Workload • Not all lessons can be outstanding!

  4. Hints/Tips • Use PPA time effectively. • Don’t use NQT time as PPA time – Remember you only get it once. • Start reports early. • Organisation – try and have all resources ready at the start of each day. • Peer marking.

  5. Hints/Tips • Have an outside interest - not school related. • Make time for yourself. • Accept that you cannot do everything! • Go on the NQT residential.

  6. Time Management • You could spend 24/7 on this job – don’t! • Have at least 1 day a week away from the job. • Use resources already available when possible – root through those cupboards. • Don’t try and re-invent the wheel – the internet is amazing! • Don’t plan too far ahead.

  7. Behaviour management • Set high expectations from the start. • Positive behaviour strategies really do work. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. • Stick to your guns – even when the tears arrive. • They will still love you tomorrow.

  8. Finally • Enjoy it – you’ve worked hard to get here! • Don’t be afraid to try out something new. A final thought – ‘A teacher affects eternity:he can never tell where his influence stops.’Henry Adams
