  1. Europe Monday 7th July “It is precisely the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest which are the indispensable ones… you together are Christ’s body.” (I Corinthians 12:22, 27)

  2. This week’s prayer theme is Europe. • During our prayer time we use a World Cup themeto explore issues of social justice that effect many countries throughout Europe and beyond.

  3. In the 21st century, football is not only a sport, it is also an international multi-million dollar industry. It can give a sense of purpose and belonging, encourage fitness, teamwork and leadership, and most of all be fun! • However, the beautiful game can also cause injustice.

  4. What issues, some relating to the World Cup, caused unrest and criticism in Brazil leading up to the event? • The price of public transport, food and rent is rising very high; little is being done to improve housing, schools and hospitals. At the same time, billions of pounds are being spent on hosting the World Cup. • For many people, the World Cup has meant losing their homes. In the favelas of São Paulo, 4,000 families have been evicted so that a new road can be constructed from the airport to the stadium. Another 6,000 are still under threat of eviction. • cafod.org.uk/worldcup

  5. Let us pray, ALL: All over the world people of every race and culture, rich and poor, are uniting to watch the World Cup. Father, may these days encourage us to work together for a more united and peaceful world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer
