Respiratory System In Class Notes:
FUNCTION OF THE RESPITORY SYSTEM • Provides oxygen for cells • Removes carbon dioxide from body
Organs that are involved • Mouth • Nose • Pharynx • Larynx • Trachea • Lungs • Epiglottis • Bronchi • Nasal cavity • Bronchioles • Alveoli • Diaphragm • Cilia
Sequence Of Breathing • 1. Air pressure drops in lungs, and air enters. • 2. Diaphragm contracts, the lungs are pulled down and expanded. • 3. Diaphragm relaxes, and lungs contract. • 4. Air is forced out of lungs.
Regulation of Breathing • Regulation is controlled by the brain • Breathing is involuntary; you can hold your breath, but the effect in temporary • Carbonic acid (carbon dioxide in water) levels dictate breathing • A drop in pH level increases breathing; a rise would slow breathing
What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system? 500,000 deaths a year are related to smoking. Lung Cancer, Bronchitis, Emphysema, and other sicknesses are caused by it. Smoking can lead to poor health within the respiratory system.
Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description: -Asthma – inflammation of the airways -Bronchitis – inflammation within the lungs -Emphysema- Destruction of lung tissue
