  2. Introduction • The Italian city states were a group of independent states in the central and northern Italian peninsula. • They were existent during the 9th to 15th century. • They became individual city states to separate from the Holy Roman Empire.

  3. Early History • The Northern city states were to first to separate. • A group of city states known as, “The Lombard League” which all became independent allies. Some of these include Milan, Bologna, and Venice.

  4. Development of the City States • Between the 13th and 15th centuries as these city states became independent, typically these states went through: • Rise in population • Huge cities emerging • Rebuilding of cathedrals • A development of commerce

  5. Nicolo Machiavelli • Diplomat, writer, politician, and humanist • He was a politician based in The Florentine Republic • Wrote a book called “The Prince”, that spoke of his political beliefs. • Much of his influence is used as a basis in Italy today.

  6. Religion • These city states wanted to leave the rule of the Catholic church they still very much believed in the Catholic religion and practiced it. • They had giant cathedrals built and missionaries spread through the city states
