  1. Creative thinking By: Erica Eakin and Kyle Girard

  2. difference • Critical thinking is a matter of thinking clearly and rationally • Creativity consists of coming up with new and relevant ideas Nonetheless, they are the two most basic thinking skills

  3. Cognitive Creativity is involved in solving problems Aesthetic Creativity is artistic creation

  4. Three principles of creativity 1. New Ideas are Composed of Old Elements 2. Not All Ideas are on a Par 3. Creativity is Enhanced by the Ability to Detect Connections Between Ideas

  5. Principle one: New ideas are composed of old elements • Mainly about “alternate possibilities” • In order to be creative, we must be ready to deviate from the ordinary and the traditional • Join different ideas together, delete or replace elements by others • The ingredients for creativity depends on the store of ideas • Solve problems by consulting other people with different expertise

  6. Principle two: not all new ideas are on a par • Valued creativity is the ability to come up with useful ideas • Cognitive Creativity • The generation of new ideas • The evaluation and modification of new ideas • Critical thinking is necessary to help determine the relevance and effectiveness of the idea • Good critical thinking does not mean that one must always be critical • Critical Thinking and Cognitive Creativity are NOT opposed to each other

  7. Principle three: Creativity is enhanced by the ability to detect connections between ideas • Useful ideas can come from unexpected sources • Seek a connection between the subject matter and other subjects that seem remote • Speedo “Fastskin” Swimsuits based on shark V-shaped ridges • Explore connections between different areas 1. Have a wide knowledge base 2. Aim at a deep understanding of connections between concepts 3. Look at ideas from all angles

  8. Creativity cycle • Step One: Research • Step Two: Explore the Connections between Ideas • Step Three: Relax and Wait • Step Four: Apply, Review and Followup

  9. Creativity cycle: Step one RESEARCH • We need to understand more about the relevant topic to obtain more background information • Useful things to do: • Obtain relevant information from the scientific literature or experts • Study the history of the problem • Do case studies of people who have dealt with similar problems • Think about analogous situations • Talk to the people who are involved

  10. Creativity Cycle: Step TwO EXPLORE THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN IDEAS • Examine and reflect on what you have • Rank the importance of the different pieces of information that you have • Investigate whether there are hidden connections between the ideas

  11. Creativity cycle: step three RELAX AND WAIT • Spend an extended period of time in order that we keep lots of different ideas in the mind • Do something relaxing and different to stimulate the mind • More relevant thoughts will float to the top of the mind • Allow time for ideas to settle

  12. Creativity cycle: Step four APPLY, REVIEW AND FOLLOWUP • Examine ideas carefully to check that they can help solve the problem • Think about whether they can be improved future • See how they are to be implemented • Review the whole process to see how you can improve next time

  13. Heuristics for creative thinking • Heuristic #1: Feature list • Heuristic #2: Analogy • Heuristic #3: Search • Heuristic #4: Perspective Shift

  14. Heuristic #1: FeaTure list • A list of its main features • One can examine the features and consider how it might be changed • Table Example

  15. Heuristic #2: ANALOGY • By comparison, we can imagine new features • The “fast-suit” is an example of this

  16. Heuristic #3: Search • Find a systematic search method • Classify different types to narrow down the search • Divide the space into portions so that the search eliminates unlikely candidates

  17. Heuristic #4: Perspective Shift • Taking different perspectives can help us appreciate difficulties or opportunities which we have not thought of before • Think about different ways of formulating a problem • Leave aside our preconceptions and explore alternative routes • Einstein said the most helpful thing was “Figuring out how to think about the problem”

  18. Mozart, famous composer “People are wrong who think my art comes easily to me. I assure you, nobody has devoted so much time and thought to composition as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not studied over and over.”
