  1. Type 2 diabetes and how to prevent it

  2. Type 2 diabetes is a disease that seems to be spreading like wildfire, with more and more adults being diagnosed with it every year, and worryingly, many children and teenagers, too. However, despite diabetes cases increasing in epidemic proportions, the good news is that it is largely preventable, and there are many things that we can do to minimize our chances of being diagnosed with it. What is Type 2 Diabetes? Simply put, diabetes is a condition that affects the individual for the rest of their life, and is caused when their blood sugar levels get dangerously high.

  3. Insulin, which is a hormone, is produced by the pancreas and controls the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream. There are 2 types of diabetes, one is caused when the pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin at all, and the other is caused when the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or when the body’s cells don’t respond to the hormone. Whether a person who has the warning signs of diabetes goes on to develop full blown diabetes, depends mainly on whether the individual is willing to make lifestyle and dietary changes, to help return their blood glucose levels to a safe and normal range.

  4. How can type 2 diabetes be prevented? In some cases, genetic inheritance can influence the development of type 2 diabetes, but behavioural and lifestyle factors are far more likely to affect whether a person gets the illness. Factors such as being overweight, not getting enough exercise, eating unhealthy foods on a regular basis, smoking and drinking alcohol, can all play a part. So, it stands to reason that if you follow these simple lifestyle changes, you will greater reduce your risk of getting type 2 diabetes:

  5. Managing your weight In fact, excess weight and being classed as obese, is the single most common cause of type 2 diabetes and your chances of being diagnosed with it increase dramatically. Managing your weight and keeping it at a healthy level is the best defence against type 2 diabetes. • Getting more exercise Nobody is asking you to suddenly start running marathons or going to yoga classes every day after work, but an increase in how physically active you are will certainly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. When your muscles are worked

  6. harder, their ability to use the hormone insulin and absorb glucose, are increased, and less stress is placed upon the cells that make insulin. • Eating better Aside from cutting out foods that are high in fat or sugar, there is evidence to suggest that regularly eating whole grains is a good way to protect yourself against diabetes. The bran and fibre contained in whole grains makes it harder for digestive enzymes to break the starches down into glucose, leading to much lower and slower increases in blood sugar and insulin, and as a result, a lower glycemic index. Wholegrains are also chock full of essential vitamins and minerals that may help to lower the risks of type 2 diabetes.

  7. Tackle your addictions You don’t need a doctor to tell you that smoking and drinking alcohol on a regular basis is bad for your health, and doing both can lead to many illnesses, type 2 diabetes included. If you can’t cut both out, then at least reduce how often you smoke and drink. If you believe yourself to be at risk of, or suffering from, type 2 diabetes, make an appointment with your local doctor and get yourself tested sooner rather than later.
