  2. Most fundamental hypotheses, the most widely known. • Two independent systems of second language performance: the acquired system and the learned system. Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis:(Stephen Krashen)

  3. The acquired system: Subconscious process. Needs natural communication to learn a language. The speaker is concentrated in communicating, not in the form of their expressions. • The learned system:Conscious process. Consciousness of formal education. “less important than acquisition”.

  4. Monitor Hypothesis:(Stephen Krashen) • Explains the relationship between acquisition and learning, and defines the influence of learning over the former. • The Monitor (learning system) plans, edits and corrects the learner when it presents 3 conditions: 1.-learner with sufficient time, 2.-that he focuses on form or thinks about correctness 3.-that he knows the rule.

  5. The role of conscious learning is limited in second language performance. The monitor is only used to correct deviations from normal speech and to give it a nicer appearance.

  6. Individual variation among language learners with regard to 'monitor' use: 1.-over users: people that use the monitor all the time (in confident people)2.-under users: people who prefer not to use all the time their conscious knowledge (extroverts) 3. - Optimal users: learners that use the monitor appropriately.
