  1. Conjunctions

  2. Coordinating Conjunctions When you coordinate something, you join it all together… Like coordinating an outfit- or a birthday party you have planned.

  3. Coordinating Conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions do the same thing. They connect words, phrases, or independent clauses together. (The latter requires a comma, so be careful!)

  4. Coordinating Conjunctions You can remember some important coordinating conjunctions with… F for A and N neither B but O or Y yet S so

  5. Coordinating Conjunctions I want ice cream and cake. Skating, walking, and bowling are three of my favorite things to do. Let’s go to the mall and then have some pizza for lunch! I’ll get the car, but you’ll have to drive. We can order pepperoni or veggies. Would you like a cake, or would you prefer a cookie?

  6. Subordinating Conjunctions Subordinate means less important. A subordinating conjunction introduces a dependent clause- a clause that isn’t as important in the sentence.

  7. Subordinating Conjunctions after, although, as, as far as, as if, as long as, as soon as, as though, because, before, if, in order that, since, so, so that, than, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, whereas, wherever, andwhile are some common subordinating conjunctions! Whew!

  8. Subordinating Conjunctions Let’s go to the mall after I finish my cake. As soon as I’m finished, we’ll go bowling. We’ll stay up late since it’s your birthday.

  9. Correlative Conjunctions These conjunctions always come in pairs. Neither….. nor Either…. or Not only….. but also

  10. Correlative Conjunctions Either we go to the mall, or I will shop alone. Not only do I not want to shop, but I also do not want pizza. I’ll neither eat pizza nor pasta.

  11. Check for understanding. Name the conjunction and the type. I will go out to play after I finish studying for my grammar test. I would love to watch television, but I must study first. Before school, I packed my lunch . I want neither chips nor cookies for a snack. Soccer and swimming are my favorite sports. Not only do I love to play tennis, but I also love to dance. I plan to go to the mall on Saturday, for I need to buy some new shoes. I should not eat my snack while using the computer.
