  3. GM Foods • Any food product that is either itself genetically modified or contains any genetically modified organisms in its ingredients • Why? • To obtain new crops with certain desirable characteristics

  4. Benefits • Resistance to insects & disease • Hardiness or adaptability to different climates • Bigger, resulting in higher yield

  5. Benefits • Better taste, smell, & look • Higher Nutrient content • Grows faster & lasts longer • Cost efficient & beneficial

  6. Genetically Modified Grown Naturally

  7. The Grapple • Genetic cross between a apple & a grape. • Was originally designed to provide a higher dose of Vitamin C per fruit, for use in food aid • Most of the funding for its development came from UNICEF

  8. Why Not? • Allergies • Alter Ecosystems • Endanger Species • Patenting crops • Ethical Implications • Creates Surplus • Lack of Labeling Laws

  9. Labeling • In Europe all GM foods must be labeled by law • In Canada there is no mandatory labeling of GM foods (only done voluntarily)

  10. Ingredients • The most common GM crops are soybeans, canola, cotton & corn • Used in many processed foods
