  1. UPRM Testbed Sandra Cruz Pol José Colom Rafael Rodríguez Lionel OramaChandrasekar

  2. Technology test bed • Work with partners to develop and evaluate new DCAS technologies for applications Examples: • Radiation laboratory will conduct fabrication and testing of the antenna systems • Evaluate the polarization matching and purity of the various NETRAD radars for DCAS application and improve design accordingly. • Characterize the integrated side-lobe performance for predicting performance in various terrains. • Characterize the performance of the wireless data links in intense tropical precipitation. Study the data loss as a function of rainfall rate.

  3. PhD, MS students at UMASS Study antennas and propagation PhD, MS students At CSU MS students Summer at UMass UPRM Testbed – Integrating Research QPE work Begin 802.11b and X-band propagation studies- moist environment/ Cruz atmos propagation models- complex terrain& urban areas/ Janaswamy Develop plan for island-wide network- consider mountainous topology = work with Paula Reese- consider flood-prone regions = work with emergency planners/Reese Refurbish Lighting APL in PR Develop low cost frequency scanning PCB antennas/Pozar Begin Puerto Rico micro-climatology survey using X-band nodes/CSU & OU Wireless telemetry Fixed/Mobile 802.11b testbed preparation 1 2 3 4 5 Develop low cost multi-band scanning antennas/work with Pozar Develop low cost fixed frequency and beam PCB antenna/ Pozar Fabricate 2 low-cost X-band nodes/ work with Sekelsky- one fixed- one mobile Develop low cost solid-state/MPM precip radar prototype/ work with Sekelsky

  4. Tropical storm/Hurricane Testbed • Develop special DCAS operations for tropical storm/hurricane environment. • A) Pre-landfall mode of operation, study approaching rain-bands • B) During land-fall to study the complete microphysical structure and the associated performance of DCAS, including loss of some radars. Collaborate with Hurricane Research Center • C) Develop and validate specific QPE algorithms tuned to tropical storms in conjunction with in-situ sampling of the raindrop size distribution. • D) Conduct systematic study of storm microphysics via polarimetric radar observations for the Puerto Rico environment .

  5. Visualization of radar coverage of PR as a test-bed Long-term Plan • Expand campus testbed into island-wide • DCAS system. • Engage National Weather Service (San Juan) • Integrate other end-users such as Emergency Management and Planning, FEMA
