NuVet Labs: What You Should Know About Canine Influenza or The Dog Flu What is it? • Also known as Canine influenza or influenza Type A (H3N8), which is one of two types of influenza A viruses known to infect dogs, the dog flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects dogs. Interestingly, canine influenza H3N8 virus first originated in horses and eventually made the leap into dogs. • It is important to note that this disease has never been passed on to humans and according to the CDC is considered a low threat.
