General Information

  • Before the industrial Revolution most people made their clothes and daily needs at home.

The Industrial Revolution was a period of time when there was a rapid growth in the use of machines and production.

  • Most developments were in textiles, steam power, and iron making industries.

When and how it started

  • This machine made Britain more technology advanced, so British Parliament passed a law saying no one who worked in a factory or was a skilled mechanic could leave the country, in fear that the ideas of factories would reach to other countries.
  • The Industrial Revolution took place in the 17 and 18 hundreds.
  • It started in Britain with a guy named James Hargeaves who invented the first cotton mill the spinning Jenny.

Samuel Slater

  • Samuel Slater was the first mill owner in America in 1793.
  • Samuel Slater, who worked at a textile mill as a kid, Immigrated to the United States.
  • Slater applied for a job to work machines. He easily got the job and started working with Moses Brown and his son. Eventually the three of them started their own mill factory.
  • This was the start of the Industrial revolution in America.

Manufacturing In the United States

  • Manufacturing in the United States grew slowly.
  • Few people in America decided to work in factories if they could own their own farm and do things the way they wanted to do them.
  • Also, the British manufacturers produced goods less expensively than American businesses could.
