  2. THE MEAN OF DEFINING Defining is a clause which carries essential information (important) that can not be removed because it would change the whole meaning of the sentence. A clause of this type does not use a comma that limit with the main clause. Due to the absence of a comma, then the complex sentence is pronounced softly without emphasis.

  3. FUNCTION OF DEFINING • A definition answer the question • A definition is required because a term is being used in a special way • A definition should be complete enough to include all the items in the category yet narrow enough to eliminate items that do not belong

  4. DEFINITION FORMULA • Term = class + characteristics • Term = general class word + specific characteristics • Term = spesific characters + general class word

Examples • Gravity is the interaction between four interaction of the basis that occurred between elementary particles • Modulus slide is the ratio of voltage slide to strain the slide • Archimedes is scientists who found style floating • Hydrometer is a instrument used to measure the specipic gravity of a liquid. • Oxygen is gas no metal • Thermometer is a tool to measure the temperature • Air is a fluid

  6. RELATIVE CLAUSES A clauses is a part of sentence that contains a noun and verb. A relative clause is one that begins with which, or who. Which and that are most commonly used in science definitions; who is used when referring to people. Science definitions often include relative clauses containing the characteristics that distinguish an item from other in the class.
