Young Women in Cancer Research Academy • Program provided by University of California, San Diego Health Sciences and the San Diego Science Alliance, BE WiSE Program • Selected BE WiSE Alumnae will be instructed by scientists at UCSD in the Oncofertility field • Academy days will be held on Saturdays on campus at the UCSD Medical School and mid-week seminars will be held at the San Diego County Office of Education on Linda Vista Rd.

Oncofertility • A new specialty in medicine • Is an unmet need that addresses the quality of life for cancer survivors • While not a large number of patients, it is 100% important for those affected • Explores reproduction for cancer patients in every aspect • This research is an essential part of what scientists do for society

Selected BE WiSE Alumnae will have the opportunity to do university level laboratory projects including: • Observations • Lab exercises specific to area of research • Dissections • Biotechnology procedures • Attend talks by investigators in the field and bioethics • Tour research labs • Use the libraries of UCSD • Use Super Computer Center at UCSD

  6. BE WiSE participants will have additional opportunities • To apply to be in the second year program • Possible Science Research that may culminate in a Science Fair entry • To be mentors for next years participants

  8. Topics for Saturday Academy • Reproduction • Dissection • In vitro fertilization • looking at follicles • Ultrasound • Process of in vitro fertilization • Cancer Center • radiation, • operating room, • cancer treatment, • drug therapy • Bioethics

Academy Dates • Saturdays at UCSD, Medical School (most 9 AM to 1 PM) • July 11 • July 18 • July 25 • August 1 • August 8 • August 15, at the San Diego Super Computer Center, UCSD At SDCOE Rindone Regional Technology Center, Computer Lab Orientation • June 27, Saturday, 9 am - lunch Wednesday Seminars at 5-7:30 PM • July 8 • July 15 • July  22 • July 29 • August 5 • August 12

  10. Commitment required by participants • Attend ALL sessions • In emergency must call director • Read journal articles • Communicate with group members • Maintain science journal • Prepare Power point and poster presentations to disseminate ideas

  11. BE WiSE Scientist In Training • Mature attitude when discussing reproduction, fertility • Respect for important health issues • Consideration of young women’s health needs • Inquisitive about research ideas

  13. Participants will prepare informational Power Point or podcast presentations on their experiences in the Oncofertility labs that can be shared with their schools • Power point and podcasts will be the concluding events at the last meeting

  14. Application Process & Timelines • Essay requirement • Successful completion of biology or chemistry • Letter of recommendation • Application due by April 3, 2009 • Notification end of April 2009
