  2. Question #1 • "It would be no good charging that sort of price for a love potion, for example. Young people who need a love potion very seldom have five thousand dollars. Otherwise they would not need a love potion." • What does the old man mean by this statement? Explain why he thinks young people who have five thousand dollars already would not need a potion to find love.

  3. Question #2 • "She will want to know all you do," said the old man. "All that has happened to you during the day. Every word of it. She will want to know what you are thinking about, why you smile suddenly, why your are looking sad." • "That is love!" cried Alan. • Do you agree with Alan – is it love if the girl behaves this way toward him? Why or why not?

  4. Question #3 • "I like to oblige," said the old man. "Then customers come back, later in life, when they are better off, and want more expensive things. • What do you think the “more expensive things” are that the old man speaks of?

  5. Question #4 • "Maybe it will clean gloves. I have never tried. One might call it a life-cleaner. Lives need cleaning sometimes." • Explain what the underlined statement means. Do you agree or disagree with it? Explain your reasoning.

  6. Question #5 • What are some of the beliefs you can identify in this story? What are the values? Create a list.

  7. TURN IN ALTERNATE ENDINGS For homework, write one half to one page where you finish the end of the story. What happens to Allen and Dianna? What happens to the old man? Make sure to maintain the point of view, tone, and general plot line of the story. Write a realistic ending to the story, not a apocalyptic zombie attack…
