Cabeza de Vaca • Began his expedition with Navarez • Was on one of the rafts that landed at Galveston Island • Spent time as a slave to the Native Americans in the Coastal Region • Escaped and made his way to Mexico City • His journal became of valuable source for us to learn about Texas during the Age of Contact Era
Colony • Land or territory claimed for a king/queen and settled with people who are under the authority of the Crown
Pineda • In 1519 he mapped the coastline of Texas which proved invaluable to other explorers
Conquistadors • Sent by monarchs to claim new land and riches for Spain
La Salle • French explorer who shipwrecked at Matagorda Bay when he sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi • Established Fort St Louis in the 1680s • Was killed by his own man
Viceroy • Served as the king’s representative in Spanish Colonies
Presidios • Forts built to house soldiers who were responsible for protecting the Spanish missions in Texas
