  27. What to do for the next quiz?

  28. Pandemic Influenza

  29. Timeline of human flu pandemics:

  30. Etc Etc

  31. Definitions The appearance of more cases of a disease than would have otherwise been expected. Epidemic Pandemic An epidemic that occurs in many places in the world.

  32. The Flu Virus • In general we talk about 2 genes/enzymes: • H – Hemagglutinin (entry into cells) • N – Neuraminidase (making new viruses) • Hence HxNy • H5N1 = avian flu • H1N1 = swine flu • etc

  33. Where Does It Come From? • Most flus are zoonoses • Originate from communities with close associations with animals (poultry and swine)

  34. Shift Vs Drift • Antigenic Drift • Random mutations in the genes • H and N antigens change shape, therefore confounding your immune system • Hence drift is responsible for us needing a new seasonal flu shot each year • Antigenic Shift • A more profound genetic change in H and N that allows the virus to jump from one species to another

  35. Types of Shift • Shift 1 • Eg: A bird flu and a human flu enter the same body and swap genes -> new flu • Shift 2 • No genetic change, just a sudden ability to jump species • Shift 3 • No genetic change, but an ability to jump from a bird/pig to intermediate host to a human
