  3. Design • A process concerned with changing the state of an environment through purposeful and constrained decision making that requires exploration, creativity and learning • A process of making a plan for the construction of an object or system

  4. An Information System • A collection of interrelated components that collect, process, store and provide as output the information needed for business tasks • The system has a purpose, inputs, outputs, components with relationships, a boundary and interfaces to an environment in which it operates

  5. Systems Analysis and System Design • Systems analysis and design is concerned with the tasks involved in the development of an information system • Analysis: Identifying and documenting the requirements of an information system • Design: Designing the system architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a software system to satisfy the requirements specified during systems analysis. • But these two tasks overlap in modern practice • Issues that arise in design often require clarification of requirements; iterative development

Designing Information Systems • In this course you will learn to use modelling tools that will help you develop good designs: • Functional modelling • Structural modelling • Behavioural modelling • Interaction modelling • Database modelling • You will participate in design studios to develop your individual and collaborative design skills
