  14. What are the signs and symptoms of influenza? • The main symptoms of influenza are: • fever • chills • headache • muscle aches • dizziness • loss of appetite • tiredness • Symptoms may also include: • sweating • sore throat • dry cough • runny nose • burning eyes • nausea • weakness • depression 13

  15. 14 Symptoms usually appear in a person 1 to 4 days after being exposed. These symptoms are similar to those of the common cold but tend to develop quickly and are often more severe than the typical sneezing and congestion of a cold. The patient’s fever rises quickly, as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. While the fever may subside after two or three days, the patient may be exhausted for days. The flu almost never causes symptoms in the stomach and intestines. The illness that some people often call "stomach flu" is not influenza, but a different virus.

  16. How can you prevent influenza? • Avoid people who are sick - keep a distance from them. • Stay home if you are sick. Don’t spread germs. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. • Wash your hands frequently and wash them well. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often carried on your • hands. 15 How long can human influenza viruses remain viable on inanimate items (such as books and doorknobs)? Studies have shown that human influenza viruses generally can survive on surfaces for between 2 and 8 hours.
