  2. Objective Today, we are going to identify and correct faulty parallel structure in sentences. • What are we going to do today? • What are we identifying? • What are we correcting?

Parallel Structure Directions: Identify the part of speech for each of the underlined words in the following paragraph.Write only the beginning letters of each part of speech under the underlined word. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom; it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief; it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light; it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope; it was the winter of despair; we had everything before; we had nothing before us; we were all going direct to heaven; we were going direct the other way – in short the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

  4. Parallel Structure When a sentence contains parallel structure, parts of the sentence contain the same pattern of words. This can happen at three levels: words, phrases, and clauses. Writers use parallel structure to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.

It is important to be able to identify and correct faulty parallel structure because: • Personal: It will help us communicate our ideas clearly and smoothly • Academic: It will help us pass the end of the semester test and score better on our essays • World: Speech writers and politicians often use parallel structure to help us understand their ideas CFU: Which of these is most important to you and why?

  9. Parallel Structure Skills Steps: • Read the sentence. • Identify the parts of speech. • Determine if there is a series of words or clauses. • Determine if the parts of speech in that series do not match each other. • If needed correct it.
