  3. Questions • Was Jesus really human, like us? • Did Jesus only look human? • How can Jesus be, as many say, man and God at the same time? • Was he half-man and half-God? • Can this mean that we can be men and gods at the same time?

  10. Jesus: unique in divinity and humanity

  11. Gatorade analogy • Can Gatorade be red? • Can Gatorade be cold? • Can Gatorade be both red and cold? * If something is red, that does not prevent it from becoming cold. * If something is cold, that does not prevent it from being red.

  12. Gatorade analogy • In the same way, Jesus being human does not stop him from being God, and being God does not preclude being human. • Jesus can be, and is both human and divine at the same time!

  13. Bible texts Today’s focus is on the human nature of Jesus. Let’s look at how the apostle John (a loyal friend of Christ) describes his humanity.

  14. Jesus was flesh The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory... – Jn 1.14 NIV

  15. Jesus got tired Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. – Jn 4.6 NLT

  16. Jesus became thirsty When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” – Jn 4.7 NIV

  17. Jesus can be wistful He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.“ From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. – Jn 6.65-67 NIV

  18. Jesus gets severe You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth …for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. – Jn 8.44-45 NASB

  19. Jesus is sorrowful Jesus wept. The Jews said, See how [tenderly] He loved him! – Jn 11.35-36

  20. Jesus is distressed Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say--'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. – Jn 12.27-28 NRSV

  21. Jesus shows affection Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. – Jn 13.1 NRSV

  22. Jesus values friendship Then Jesus, … came forward and asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" They answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus replied, "I am he." … Again he asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go." Jn 18.4-8 NRSV

Jesus feels injustice When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?” Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest. – Jn 18.22-24 NIV

  24. Conclusions • Jesus, though of the same nature as God, was a human like us! • Jesus can relate with our thoughts, emotions, and struggles. • The question to ask is: how was he as a man?

  25. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. Heb 5.7-8 NIV

  26. Just as Jesus did… • Will you offer yourself to God? • Will you fully submit yourself in reverence? • Will you surrender everything about you to Him?
