  1. Sound Transmission Class for Masonry Walls

  2. Standard Method for Determining the Sound Transmission Class Rating for Masonry Walls(TMS 0302)

  3. TMS 0302 • 1.0 Scope • 2.0 Referenced Standards • 3.0 Notations • 4.0 Definitions • 5.0 Materials • 6.0 Construction • 7.0 Quality Assurance • 8.0 Sound Transmission Class (STC) Rating

  4. TMS 03021.0 SCOPE • Minimum requirements for STC • Field or laboratory standard test methods, or • Calculation procedure

  5. TMS 03024.0 DEFINITIONS • Sound Transmission Class, STC • Single number rating – ASTM E413

  6. TMS 03025.1 MASONRY UNITS • Shall comply with the following ASTM standards: • C34, C55, C56, C62, C73, C90, C126, C129, C212, C216, C652, or C744

  7. TMS 03025.2 MORTAR • Shall comply with ASTM C270

  8. TMS 03025.3 GROUT • Shall comply with ASTM C476

  9. TMS 03026.0 CONSTRUCTION • Shall conform to the requirements: • General building code • Standard

  10. TMS 0302 6.1 PLACING MORTAR AND MASONRY UNITS • Hollow units – face shell mortared head and bed joints • Solid units – full mortared head and bed joints

  11. TMS 03026.2.1 SEALING OPENINGS AND JOINTS • Completely seal through-wall openings. • Prior to sealing fill gaps with: • Foam • Cellulose fiber • Glass fiber • Ceramic fiber • Mineral wool

  12. TMS 03026.2.2 SEALING OPENINGS AND JOINTS • Completely seal partial-wall penetration openings and inserts.

  13. TMS 03026.2.3 SEALING OPENINGS AND JOINTS • Seal the following w/elastomeric joint sealants (ASTM C920): • Control joints • Expansion joints • Top of walls and roof • Roof assemblies

  14. TMS 03026.2.3 SEALING OPENINGS AND JOINTS • Fill joint space behind sealant with: • Mortar • Grout • Foam • Cellulose fiber • Glass fiber • Mineral wool

  15. TMS 0302 (Commentary)FIG. 6.2.1 ACOUSTICAL LEAKS

  16. TMS 0302 (Commentary)FIG. 6.2.2 SEALING AROUND PENETRATIONS AND FIXTURES

  17. TMS 03028.0 SOUND TRANSMISSION CLASS RATING • Determine in accordance with: • 8.1 Laboratory testing – ASTM E 90 • 8.2 Field testing – ASTM E413 • 8.3 Calculation

  18. TMS 03028.3 CALCULATION • For walls greater than 3 inches • STC = 0.18W + 40 (Eq.1) • W = Wall Weight, psf

  19. TMS 0302 (Commentary)

  20. TMS 0302 (Commentary)FIG 8.3-1 WALL WEIGHT VS. STC

  21. TMS 0302TABLE 8.3-1

  22. TMS 0302 (Commentary)TABLE 8.3-2 – CALCULATED STC RATINGS FOR CONCRETE MASONRY WALLS

  23. EXAMPLE • Given: • W = wall weight = 41 psf • STC = 0.18W + 40 • STC = 0.18(41) + 40 • STC = 47.4
