CERTAIN STATISTICS 3 000 000 – approximatepopulationof Armenia. 12 – number of daily newspapers. 35 - 40 000 – their daily aggregate circulation. 21 – number of public TV channels. 14 – number ofFM radio stations. 9 – numberof online resources. 3000 – averagenumber of their visitors per day. Only4daily newspapers have their own web-sites. None of online media outlets has multimedia capacity.

JOURNALISM EDUCATION • 10Armenian universities produce journalists • About300 graduating students receive journalism bachelor diplomaeach year • Only 19% of graduates find jobs by specialty • Only 28% of acting reporters have journalism education • Only Yerevan State University has the necessary technical base, literature and teachers to produce journalists

WHAT WE DEMAND FROM OUR REPORTERS: • Efficiency: • React to events as quickly as possible; • Run news ahead of competitors; • Use all latest techniques to getting news into the agency; • Trustworthiness: • Verify the authenticity of facts if any doubt occurs; • Give away efficiency for maximum authenticity;

  5. Other requirements and wishes • ethics • multimedia • technical skills • flair • versatility • communicability • ability to distinguish between Info and Ad • knowledge of foreign languages • good team player

  6. What will change? Forecast: • TV will play a bigger role • More entertaining programs will be produced • Most of newspapers will move to Internet • Most of news agencies will become online • Online media will emphasize multimedia and interactivity • Infotainment will gain huge popularity • Scandals and sensations will become an essential attribute of news • Commercialization of media will continue • Blogs can become an “alternative” type of media • Journalism will become something that everyone will be able to do temporarily or permanently!

  7. WHAT CAN BE DONE? 1. Develop new models of journalism education, using the latest technologies. 2. Organize courses to improve journalists, operators, photo correspondents with emphasis on versatility . 3. Organize advanced courses for current journalists. 4. Reduce the gap between the theoretical knowledge and practice in universities. 5. Organize special training courses on journalism ethics. 6. Organize retraining courses for people who come into journalism from other professions. 7. Encourage journalistic research and investigation.
