There were many conflicts that occurred which led up to the Revolutionary War
The American colonists leaders wrote The Declaration of Independence to send to the King of England.
The author of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson, the eventual 3rd President of the United States.
The original draft of the Declaration of Independence had a section that spoke against the enslavement of African Americans BUT was taken out because Americans from the South vehemently opposed and protested against it.
African Americans fought ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WAR.
The British and the American Colonists both promised the African slaves freedom if they helped to win the war.
Some slave masters even sent their slaves to fight in their place.
MANY Southerners were very reluctant however to give African slaves the right to bare arms, even if it was to fight in the war.

African Americans believed that by fighting they would eventually gain their freedom.
