  1. Numbers The Book of Wanderings

  2. The Book of Wanderings • The Principle of Wandering. “Wandering” is usually used negatively. • Why might righteous people wander? • From persecution. • For self-gratification.

  3. The Book of Wanderings • God took Israel from Egypt, across the Red Sea, and into the wilderness of Sinai up to KadeshBarnea, all in His will. It was then His will that the people enter into the promise, but they died in the wilderness. • God may take us through a wilderness experience that will enable us to enter into His promise, but it is never His will that we wander in the wilderness until we die.

  4. Purpose • Give an account of the 40 years that Israel wandered in the wilderness, a year for each day. The judgment was proportionate to the lie they were believing. • Record the two numberings of the two generations at the beginning and ending of the 40 years. • 1st generation: 603, 550 • 2nd generation: 601, 750

  5. Message • When we are unfaithful… • God remains faithful.

  6. Timeframe • Chs. 1-10 – 20 days • Chs. 11-14 – 70 days • Chs. 15-20 – 38 years • Chs. 21-36 – 5 months

  7. Major Themes • The Census Numbers • The Testing by Yahweh • The Balaam Oracles

  8. Major Themes The Census Numbers • Common procedure in Israel’s day • Three functions: • Determining numbers for war • Work organization and assignments • Basis for taxation

  9. Major Themes The Census Numbers • First census: taken second year after the exodus • Numbered first generation of those after the exodus (males 20+) • Second census: taken fortieth year after the exodus • Numbered second generation of those after the exodus (males 20+) • Both censuses: total number of Israelites = • Either: +/- 72,000 – 400,000 • Or: +/- 2,000,000 – 3,000,000

  10. Major Themes The Testing by Yahweh • Testing is a repeated theme in the Pentateuch • Purpose of Yahweh’s testing was to humble the Israelites so that they might learn: • total dependence on him • teach obedience to his commandments • show them the true condition of their hearts

  11. Major Themes The Balaam Oracles • More widely known for the humorous misadventures of a pagan prophet hired by the Moabite Balak to cure Israel • Enhances the message of Yahweh’s covenant with Israel by reminding them they are blessed and protected • Encourages Israel as they journey toward the promise land—God is in sovereign control over all nations

  12. Outline • The Old Generation (1-14) • The offering for jealousy (5): after the worship of the Golden Calf at Mt. Sinai, the entire nation went through this process, proving them to be guilty. • The failure of unbelief (13-14) • Two witnesses confirmed God’s Word. • Faith had a day to act. The next day,the same act was presumption. The Word of the Lord usually doesn’t come until it is time for us to act.

  13. Outline • The Wandering (15-20) – They murmured and grumbled against the Lord, resulting in wilderness wandering and God’s judgment. • Murmuring due to the adversity of the wilderness on the way to the promise. The fire of the Lord burned the ones on the outskirts of the camp who had been complaining. • Murmuring among the “mixed multitude” who “yielded to intense craving,” asking for meat rather than just manna. They Lord had given them all they needed, but they wanted more.

  14. Outline • The Wandering (15-20) – They murmured and grumbled against the Lord, resulting in wilderness wandering and God’s judgment. • Murmuring among the people when the spies brought back a report that there were giants in the land. • Murmuring by Korah and his family. They were Levites who were responsible for carrying the furniture from the tabernacle. They were not satisfied with God’s appointment and wanted more authority. • Murmuring by some of the people at God’s judgment of Korah.

  15. Outline • The Wandering (15-20) – They murmured and grumbled against the Lord, resulting in wilderness wandering and God’s judgment. • Murmuring when they ran out of water. Moses struck the rock rather than speaking to it, but water still came out of the rock. Even though they were disobedient, God still loved the people. • Murmuring again about God’s provision of manna. *The sin of ingratitude: In every case of murmuring, the people were ungrateful.

  16. First-World Probs Thanks to the idiot who decided it was a good idea to faint on my plane, I am now: spending the night in Chicago/missing my first day of spring semester classes.

  17. First-World Probs I’m kind of at the point where if the house cleaners were to cancel again, I think I would cry tears of agony. #somuchdust

  22. First-World Probs I’m 22 years old and pay how much to go here? Yea, so I’m gonna need you to go ahead and not yell at me in the middle of class for texting. ThankssssssssSSSsSssSssSss

  23. First-World Probs Asked for the all black 5S & got the gold one I hate my parents I hate my life guess I’m staying with the 5

  24. First-World Probs Oh parents! I asked for the ~$500 Surface 2, because it is light weight and not too expensive, and has everything I want on it, and I want something to carry in my purse without worrying too much. And they get me the ~$1000 Surface 2 Pro, which is heavier, and way more than I need, and costs more than my ‘real’ laptop. And your ‘play’ tablet computer for typing blog entries on the commuter bus should not cost more than your real computer. So I have to go exchange it, and wait for however long for the Surface 2s to come back in stock, because they are sold out everywhere (note I’m not complaining, since they just wanted to get me the best tablet, it’s just a hassle

  25. First-World Probs This video isn’t showing up on my Apple TV for some reason so I have to watch it in browser like some kind of animal.

  26. First-World Probs Driving but not having my mustang in California is a moderate form of torture
