  1. March into Learning Rooms 7 and 8

  2. Introduction • Goals for our Year 7/8 students: • Independent • Responsible • Leadership opportunities • Preparing for college • Becoming critical thinkers (thinking around issues) • Caring • Active contributors • Confident • Risk taking with their learning

  3. What a day usually looks like in Room 7 and 8:

  4. Maths • The aim at Year 7 and 8 is to encourage flexible mathematical thinking. Children should be able to choose from a range of strategies to solve maths problems. • We use our maths in a range of contexts e.g. finding perimeters and areas of shapes, calculating percentages, and finding the mean, median and mode for statistical problems. • We encourage problem solving skills and children often work together to share ideas and learn from each other.

  5. Reading/Writing • Our reading programmes vary and include independent reading, shared reading, guided reading groups and teacher reading to the class. • In writing we have introduced the idea of ‘Writer’s Notebook’ or ‘Seed’ books. The children gather ideas for writing and develop these before choosing a suitable text type.

  6. Religious Education • This term we are focusing on the teachings of Jesus. • Room 8 has been looking at the Beatitudes and Room 7is reflecting on Jesus’ role as a teacher and leader. • Our prayer times encourage children to develop their own relationship with God through listening and responding to Bible stories, singing, and personal prayers.

  7. P.E. and Fitness • Everyday we do 10 minutes of high intensity exercise on the top field to switch the children on for the day. • Exercise gives us endorphins which help us learn. • P.E. happens on Friday’s. This term we are learning athletics skills and later will head to the Karori Recreation Centre for Gymnastics.

  8. TurangawaewaeUnit • Tūrangawaewae is one of the most well-known and powerful Māori concepts. Literally tūranga (standing place), waewae (feet), it is often translated as ‘a place to stand’. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. • Our school as Turangawaewae – what makes it unique, its history, its people. How we can make it a better place to be.

  9. Homework • Homework includes reading and maths. • The Mathsmate programmes contains a little bit of everything we cover this year and children are not expected to get it all right at the start of the year. • Reading homework will vary each term. • The Home Learning Challenge is encouraged. Year 8 children have a separate Leadership Home Learning Challenge.

  10. Other programmes • Languages(Spanish) • Technology • Music • Drama • Recreation Centre programmes • Life Education • Leadership Week • Swimming (Term 3)
