Attitude and Behavior • Do attitudes tell us about someone’s behavior? • La Piere’s Study (1934) • General attitudes vs. specific behaviorLaPierre (1934): The attitude-behavior problem. • – In a classic study, LaPierre (1934) drove through the U.S. with a Chinese couple. They stopped at over 250 restaurants and hotels and were refused service only once. • Several months later, the owners were surveyed on whether they would serve Chinese people. The response was overwhelmingly negative, 92 percent of those surveyed said that they would not. • In this case, clearly, their behavior gave less evidence of racial bias than their expressed attitudes did • http://www.psychlotron.org.uk/resources/social/AS_AQB_social_attitudes_lapiere.pdf Cognitive Dissonance Theory • People want to have consistent attitudes and behaviors….when they don’t, they experience dissonance (unpleasant tension). • Usually they will change their attitude and not their behavior. The teacher was really bad so in that class it is OK. You have a belief that cheating on tests is bad. But you cheat on a test!!!

  6. Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination Stereotype: • Overgeneralized idea about a group of people. Prejudice: • Undeserved (usually negative) attitude towards a group of people. Ethnocentrism is an example of a prejudice. Discrimination: • An action based on a prejudice.

  9. How does prejudice occur? Just world Phenomenon • In one popular study female and male subjects were told two versions of a story about an interaction between a woman and a man. Both variations were exactly the same, except at the very end the man raped the woman in one and in the other he proposed marriage. • In both conditions, both female and male subjects viewed the woman's (identical) actions as inevitably leading to the (very different) results. Ingroup vs. Outgroup. Bystander Effect: • Conditions in which people are more or less likely to help one another.   15. Proximity • Geographic nearness Mere exposure effect: • Repeated exposure to something breeds liking.

  16. Reciprocal Liking • You are more likely to like someone who likes you. • Why? • Except in elementary school!!!!

  27. Asch’s Results • About 1/3 of the participants conformed. • 70% conformed at least once. What did we learn from Milgram? • Ordinary people can do shocking things. • Gradual, repetitive escalation of task. • People have a strong tendency to comply with authority figures. • Justify their behavior by assigning responsibility to the authority figure rather than themselves. • Define expected behavior as routine • Don’t want to offend authority figure. • Ethical issues…. • Would not have received approval from today’s IRB (Internal Review Board).

  34. Groupthink • Group members suppress their reservations about the ideas supported by the group. • They are more concerned with group harmony. • Worse in highly cohesive groups.
