The Progressive Era • Progressive: progress, moderate political change and social improvement by government action. • In other words: Make living conditions better for Americans. The people wanted the government to get involved.
The 3 R’s • Progressive era can be summed up in the 3 R’s • Referendum: allows voters to decide if a bill or amendment should be passed. • Reform: Improvements in environment, economic regulations,health and safety. • Recall: voters have elected representatives removed from office.
Changes the Progressives Made • cleaning up the cities • providing sewers and gutters • paving streets • regulation on companies causing air pollution • regulation on RR shipping prices • Establishment of National Parks (Yellowstone)
Changes the Progressives Made • safe food: many sold rotten or soiled food, formaldehyde in milk • prohibit dangerous employment for women and kids • 8 hour work day • workmen’s compensation • educating people with disabilities • The Progressive era ended with WWI
Prohibition • 1920 Constitution amendment (XVIII), making it illegal to manufacture, sell, or consume alcoholic beverages
Reasons for Prohibition: • Social reformers: blamed alcohol for poverty, health problems, family neglect • Political reformers: saloons were the backbone of corrupt politics • Business owners: drunkenness reduced safety and productivity on the job • Religious leaders: drunkenness was immoral
Prohibition • Very difficult to enforce • Led to increase in Bootlegging • You get new speak-easies • Led to increase in organized crime. (Al Capone)
