  2. Why do I need design options? • Design options bring sketches, thoughts and ideas to realization. • Design options give the client or end user an idea of what the design could look like. • They outline the key features of individual designs. • They help to choose the most appropriate option based from the design brief.

  3. What should I include? • 4-6 Design Options (clearly numbered) • Annotations of key concepts in the design option • Creativeness (remember to be creative with the presentation) • 2 A3 pages per Design Option • One for the design drawing • One for evaluation, material swatches, client comments, key features etc • Remember: The design option should fulfill and compliment the design brief. Try not to design something that doesn’t match what is stated in the design brief.

  5. Page 2 (information page) • Timber swatches (can have multiple) Botanical Name: Agathus Robusta Appearance: This large softwood grows through south east Asia. The heartwood is a pale yellow brown colour and the sapwood can be quite white. The grain is usually very straight. Workability: Good Image and information Source: http://www.monarotimber.com.au/sp_kauri.htm

  6. Page 2 (Information page) • Client comment: • The client comment can be in many forms. The most effective is a comment box/ bubble. (see examples below) • The speech bubbles are made quickly in a word document Client Comment: The tapered effect of the legs gives the table a fantastic light quality. I love the use of bold thick timber running throughout the design. I feel that the legs may be a bit bulbous in their appearance. Overall a nice looking design Client Comment: The tapered effect of the legs gives the table a fantastic light quality. I love the use of bold thick timber running throughout the design. 9. Any other relevant information • Is their any other relevant information? • Costs of materials • Different finishes • Oil • Polyurethane • Single pack epoxy • How the design addresses the relevant design factors. ????????

  10. Decision Matrix • Once you have completed all design options you will need to complete a decision matrix. 1 A3 PAGE • The information and scoring can be taken from each of the evaluation criteria that have been applied to individual designs. Chosen Design option

  11. Justifying the preferred option • The justification statement is where you as the designer can justify how the chosen design came to fruition. • Things to include are: • The key features of the design • The score of the evaluation criteria • Links back to the design brief Example: Mr Jones chose design option No. 1. It was obvious to him by the use of simple but elegant joinery techniques used by the designer. The proportions of the table were perfect for the intended space and the modernist design was exactly what he was after. Mr Jones also loved the use of tapers and bevels throughout the design to create a sense of weightlessness.
