  3. Sports Medicine • The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and treatment of injuries that occur to athletes and the active population - anatomy - physiology - strength training - psychology - nutrition - therapeutic modalities (ice, heat, e-stim, ultrasound)

  7. Sign • Objective indicators that are observable by others - swelling, bleeding

  8. Symptom • Experienced only by the patient • Subjective - nausea, dizziness, sore throat

  9. Etiology – the cause of a disease or injury • Diagnosis – establishing the cause and nature of a disease or injury from its signs and symptoms • Prognosis – a prediction of the outcome of a disease or injury

  10. Sagittal plane – divides body into right and left sides Frontal – divides body into front and back Transverse – divides body into upper and lower half Planes of the Body

  13. Referred Pain • Many abdominal injuries will cause pain in a body part away from the injured area What causes it? innervated by the same spinal segment Ex: Spleen injury – may cause pain in the left shoulder and upper arm KEHR’s SIGN Liver pain in the right shoulder

  14. What is “getting the wind knocked out?” • Direct blow to the solar plexus – region of nerves in the upper middle abdomen * Causes temporary paralysis of the diaphragm
